Abstract

Application of supercritical fluids (SCF) for deashing and separation of coke-oven tars has been discussed. Solvent selection has been considered in terms of solvent power and selectivity. Of the possible coke-oven tar processing routes involving SCF solvents, the two-stage sub- and super-critical extraction route including an aliphatic-aromatic mixed solvent is preferred. The low operating temperature, deashing and separation of pitch and oil are the salient features of the method. Preliminary economic calculations have shown the advantage of the SCF extraction over tar distillation.
