Abstract

The volatile yields from thirteen coals varying in rank from lignite to anthracite were measured under conditions of pulverized coal combustion and gasification in a specially designed bench scale batch reactor. The results were then related to coal characteristics as determined by standard laboratory tests. Positive correlations between the volatile yields and the elmental composition of the coals were established and expressed as linear equations. The correlations developed in the batch reactor were then compared to test data from a flow reactor, and the two sets of data were found to be in good agreement.
