Abstract

Removal of occult IUDs from 13 patients using CO2 hysteroscopy is reported. IUDs involved were Lippes loops (4) Dalkon shields (4) copper Ts (3) 2 butterflies and 2 plastic rings. In 2 cases 2 IUDs were seen in the cavum. IUDs had been in place an average of 2.5 years. Hysteroscopy was performed under local anesthesia in 11 cases; intubation anesthesia was used in 2 cases because the patients wanted laparoscopic sterilization at the same time. 1 patient was pregnant at the time of hysteroscopy and removal of the IUD. The authors foresee increased use of hysteroscopy as IUD use increases.
