Abstract
Since 1968, measurements of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and in surface seawater have been made to clarify the role of the ocean in the global carbon cycle. Temporal and spatial variations in the oceanic carbonate system are summarized here, along with the techniques for atmospheric and oceanic CO2 measurements developed by the Meteorological Research Institute, Japan Meteorological Agency.
