Abstract

AbstractLiquefaction of an Alberta subbituminous coal (Highvale) with bitumen was studied using a semi‐continuous, two stage, hot charge‐discharge (HCD) unit. Experiments were performed using a CO/steam atmosphere in the first, and H2 atmosphere in the second stage. The second stage (hydrogenation) reactor input and output gas temperatures, compositions, reactor gas and liquid temperatures were measured during the reaction. In the numerical solutions of the mass and energy balance equations experimental data were used, and hydrogen consumption, heteroatom (O and S) removal, hydrocarbon gas production kinetic rate constants, and hydrogenation reaction enthalpy were determined.
