Abstract

Indium(I) halides react with 1,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)dithieten (L) to yield the compounds InLX (X = Cl, Br, or l), which are believed to be polymeric indium(III)–dithiolato-complexes. Reaction of these latter substances with dimethyl sulphoxide (dmso) gives [InL(dmso)4]X; with 2,2-bipyridyl (= bipy) or 1,10-phenanthroline, the product is an ionic dimer of the type [InL(bipy)2][InL2(bipy)]. Spectroscopic and polarographic evidence is presented to support the formulation of all these complexes as indium(III) species, indicating that the initial reaction involves the oxidative insertion of indium(I) into the S–S bond of the dithieten.
