Abstract

Complex formation of Nb(V) and Ta(V) with malic acid has been investigated. Crystalline, colourless compounds of formulae A(I)[Nb 2O 2(OH)(C 4H 3O 5) 2]·4H 2O, [ A( I) = Na, K, ( C 6 H 5) 4) P and ( C 6 H 5) 4 As]were prepared. M(I) salts, [ M = Na, K and tetraphenyl- onium salts, respectively]are isomorphous. Infrared spectra indicate the presence of coordinated malato ligands, terminal Nb = O groups and hydrogen bonded water molecules. According to infrared spectral evidence, there is no Nb-O-Nb bridging in these compounds. The structure of the dimeric malato niobate anion is discussed.
