Abstract
A purified aqueous extract of Iresine herbstii Hook. f. (Amaranthaceae) was investigated for its CNS pharmacological profile. The extract significantly reduced the locomotor activity, motor coordination and stereotyped behavior of mice. On the other hand, the extract did not exert significant changes on the nociceptive threshold in the hot plate and tail flick test. In addition, no effect was registered on sleep induced by pentobarbital or cataleptic response. The results of the present study suggest that Iresine herbstii induces significative effects on selected aspects of the central nervous system (CNS).
