Abstract

Some may remember back in 2003 CNN unexpectedly terminated contracts for 300 unionized camera operators, and the union filed an unfair labor practice (ULP) charge. Seventeen years later, the case was settled in January 2020 when CNN agreed to the largest settlement ever with the National Labor Relations Board, committing to pay $76 million to the terminated former workers. At the heart of the case was the question whether CNN was a “joint employer” with the agency that supplied those camera people.
