Abstract

The diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases, both benign and malignant is part of the activities of the maxillofacial surgeon. ObjectiveReport histopathogically confirmed cases of oral cancer. Material and methodsType of study: observational and descriptive. DesignTransversal, retrospective, from January 1989 to December 2005, of all diagnoses recorded in the Department of Pathology of the hospital's second level health care General Hospital Zone of the Mexican Social Security Institute in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, where maxillofacial surgery service is located. Study subjects: all diagnoses obtained by histological study of biopsies performed on patients from the CMF was included. Type and sample size: 1,211 consecutive cases. Study variables; histological diagnosis, gender and age of the patient. Descriptive statistics with measures of central tendency and dispersion. Ethical considerations approval of the Local Committee of Institutional Research. ResultsBiopsies for histology received by the Department of Pathology in the 17 years (1989-2005) were 34 118 specimens, 1,211 cases (3.5%) were sent by maxillofacial surgery and 53 cases of cancer; 31 carcinomas, 10 malignant salivary gland tumors, sarcomas and lymphomas 12. ConclusionOral cancer diagnosed by histological study of insured population of the Social Security System in Mexico contributing to increasing knowledge of the same in the Mexican population is reported.
