Abstract

After a brief overview of the design and construction of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment, the installation of its detector subsystems and the general commissioning strategy is reviewed. Particular emphasis is made on the performance measured with cosmic muons prior and after the collision data-taking and on the observation of the first beam events.
