Abstract

The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act was approved by Congress as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 [1]. The HITECH Act mandates the creation of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology to catalyze the national adoption of interoperable electronic health record (EHR) technology, and in March 2009, the Obama administration named David Blumenthal, MD, to lead this effort. The HITECH Act enables the use of stimulus funds to reform health care by establishing incentive payments to eligible providers (EPs) and hospitals for the meaningful use of certified EHR technology [2].
