Abstract

In this paper we have proposed a subband wise Spectrum Sensing (SS) and spectrum utilization for Cognitive Radio (CR). Filter Bank Multi Carrier (FBMC) techniques are used for wideband spectrum sensing to identify multiple available bands at a time for spectral utilization. Cosine Modulated Filter Bank (CMFB) using Energy Detection method is proposed for detection of primary users/spectral holes. CMFB were chosen as it provides specified subband attenuation and good spectral containment. The maximum number of bits that can be allocated to each subchannel is determined from the Channel State Information (CSI). A rate request sequenced algorithm is proposed for allocating spectral holes to secondary users in a spectrally efficient manner. Simulation results show that spectrum is distributed more efficiently among users with less computational complexity when rate requests are sequenced. Request denial rate is also reduced when rate requests are sequenced and higher capacity is achieved when compared to random allocation.
