Abstract

The type species of Clypeostroma, C. spilomeum, was re‐examined. It was found to be distinct from another Hebe leaf pathogen described from the subantarctic, C. hemisphaericum. C. spilomeum has ascomata with several pseudothecia covered by a common clypeus, fissitunicate asci, 2‐celled ascospores with pale brown walls, and no paraphyses. Although clearly a bitunicate ascomyc‐ete, its relationship amongst these fungi remains uncertain. C. hemisphaericum probably belongs in a different genus, but more material is required before its position can be resolved.
