Abstract

Laser ionization mass spectrometry was used to study the formation of B n N m + cluster ions in a laser plasma. The abundance distributions of homonuclear B n + and heteronuclear B n N m + cluster ions in laser mass spectra were measured. For the B n N n-1 + and B n N n-2 + cluster ions, a typical alternating abundance distribution with the higher intensities of the cluster ions with the odd atomic number was observed. The intensities of BC n + cluster ions of a boron nitride-graphite mixture were measured. The abundance distribution of BC n + cluster ions corresponded with the distribution of carbon cluster ions C n +.
