Abstract

Earth9s crust contains higher abundances of alkali metals than the mantle. In the crust, feldspars are the key hosts for alkali metals, but which minerals are involved in processing alkali metals in the deep Earth is not known. As Akaogi discusses in this Perspective, a high-pressure mineral called hollandite has all the right properties to act as a deep Earth alkali host. This mineral has been produced in high-pressure experiments and has now also been identified in a shocked meteorite by Gillet et al. (page 1633).
