Abstract

The study of mesoscale convective clouds is an important issue in weather analysis. As a consequence, several methods have been introduced for cloud tracking on satellite images. Two kinds of methods are commonly used, based on shape matching and motion tracking. In this paper, a new motion tracking method based on a snake model is introduced. Snakes are known to be more efficient than level sets however they do not handle topological changes. Therefore, the hereafter method considers the cloud tracking problem in two parts. First, the snake model used for motion tracking is presented. Techniques are given to ensure the robustness of the method for the tracking of high deformable objects. Secondly, the problem of topological transformation is addressed. Split and merging are characterised and performed by applying geometrical criteria and methods. The method is applied to real cases data and some results are presented and discussed.
