Abstract

Fibrin formation in the anterior segment of the eye depends upon factors in the aqueous humor and upon components released from the surrounding tissues. To amplify our understanding of the circumstances that control clot formation, numerous experimental observations were accumulated using the anterior chamber of the rabbit as a living test tube. <h3>Methods and Materials</h3> The study was carried out on rabbits of different ages and races. The eyes were anesthetized with one-half per cent tetracaine (Pontocaine) solution and fixed with a small toothed forceps applied to the superior rectus muscle, while the animals were manually immobilized by an assistant. The standard experiment consisted in evacuation of the rabbit's anterior chamber by means of 30-gauge needles 1 in. long that were attached to 1 ml. syringes.
