Abstract

The author states that with respect to the concept of discrete stiff chains of sand particles, only experimental results are presented. The results do not speculate about the sand-structure conditions that might have been factored into these results. As to the discussers question about the PLAXIS study showing plate settlements with different values for K, the author notes that the PLAXIS model does include a stress dependent stiffness and that the discussers are correct in their predicting that the finite-element results should show the same trend in settlements as seen in the experiments. The paper discusses the importance of lateral stress versus settlement, citing the work of Schmertmann (1972, 1985) and Handy (2001).
