Abstract

When floodplains become overflown, the difference between flow velocities in the main channel and the in floodplain cause large-scale mixing patterns in the river bank zone. To calculate the discharge capacity of a river, it is important to accurately estimate the momentum transfer that is associated with this flow mixing. This discussion adresses the issue of including topographical characteristics of the river to estimate the momentum transfer between flow in the main channel and the floodplain. 1020-1022 / JOURNAL OF HYDRAULIC ENGINEERING © ASCE / NOVEMBER 2009.
