Abstract

In the past decade Clostrdioides difficile has become a leading enteric pathogen causing antibiotic-associated diarrohoea and colitis. The manifestations range from diarrhoea to life-threatening damage to the large intestine. It is noted as a nosocomial and community acquired infection in most of the countries including India. It affects elderly persons most commonly in hospital settings. Actual burden of C. difficile infection in India is underestimated due to paucity of diagnostic techniques. Reports from different regions of India have shown a varying prevalence from 4 to 37 The condition presents with diarrhoea and abdominal cramps. Severe cases may lead to fulminant colitis. Metronidazole andor vancomycin are the drugs of choice in the treatment.
