Abstract

There are clear gender disparities in leadership positions at gastroenterological organisations, with women representing only 19% of all gastroenterology fellowship programme directors and divisional or departmental chairs in academic institutions in the USA1 and only 20% of editorial board members in gastroenterology and hepatology journals.2 To date, the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases have each had five or fewer female presidents since they were founded more than 70 years ago.
