Abstract

In this work we present a closed-form solution for the electromagnetic scattering of a plane wave by a dielectric prolate or oblate spheroid. The problem is solved using asymptotic expansions on the spherical eigenvectors, allowing a closed-form solution which is valid for small eccentricities of the spheroid. We validate our approach by comparing with the exact solution, using the separation of variables in terms of the spheroidal eigenvectors. Both TE and TM polarizations are considered and numerical results are given for various values of the parameters.
