Abstract

Abstract The closed-loop recycling of PolyCarbonate/Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (PC/ASA) housings from post-consumer payment terminals that are subject to a take-back scheme is presented. The technical feasibility is evaluated by means of mechanical and rheological testing. Compared to virgin PC/ASA, a loss in impact strength is found to be the main bottleneck. The blending with PC/Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (PC/ABS) demonstrated good compatibility. This strengthens the robustness of closed-loop recycling due to the presence of this plastic in the same product. Quality improvement in compounding, blending with virgin plastic and eco-design approaches are seen as viable strategies to overcome quality and material losses.
