Abstract

The wireless sensor node, being a micro-electronic device, can only be equipped with a limited power source. In some application scenarios, replenishment of power resources might be impossible. Sensor node lifetime, therefore, shows a strong dependence on battery life-time. Hence, energy conservation and energy efficient protocols are used to extend the battery life. In this paper transmission power control (TPC) based on Fuzzy logic control (FLC) is implemented to minimize the transmission power without affecting the throughput. It is observed that closed loop FLC based TPC (CL-FTPC) provides a better control in transmission power than open loop FLC based TPC (OL-FTPC). The performance of these two techniques are compared with that of the standard IEEE 802.15.4 MAC protocol with respect to parameters such as Average transmission power, Average energy per successful transmission, throughput and percentage energy saving.
