Abstract

Contrary to the general view that the solution of gravity-driven unsteady flows in vertical vessels with sudden contractions can only be accomplished numerically, it will be shown that a closed-form solution, in fact, does exist, for prismatic and cylindrical vessels. This solution allowed the calculation of flow parameters of interest in these types of flows such as flux velocity, pressure, time of drainage, and unsteady flow forces acting on the vessel. The application of the developed formulations allowed a broader picture to be obtained as related to the behavior of these flow parameters in vessels with different contraction ratios.
