Abstract

Many species of freshwater molluscs exist in North America. Among these are the common gastropods Helisoma trivolvis, Physa acuta, and Goniobasis virginica. Additionally, the Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea, which found its way from China to North America some 70 years ago, is a very common bivalve. A considerable gap remains in the knowledge of lipid metabolism and lipid biochemistry in molluscs. The purpose of this research is to clone and express thiolase enzymes in various freshwater molluscs.
