Abstract

Langerhans-cell tumours are controversial with regard to the state of differentiation, cause, and whether they represent true neoplastic disease. Langerhans-cell histiocytosis has been associated with malignant disease (especially acute leukaemias),1 but the biological basis for this link is unknown. We report two cases of Langerhans-cell histiocytosis arising in the context of precursor T-lymphoblastic leukaemia/lymphoma. The Langerhans-cell histiocytosis cells and the precursor T lymphoblastic leukaemia/lymphoma cells had identical rearrangements of the gene for T-cell receptor γ, confirming a clonal relation between the two neoplastic diseases.
