Abstract

1. A study is presented of the frequency of infestation by Ancylostoma doudenale or by Necator americanus and by Trichuris trichittra in 2026 chil­dren leaving the Pediatrics Section of Hospital San Juan de Dios, San Jose, C. R. during the first four months of 1953. 2. Of these children, 32.7 per cent were positive for one or both parasites, mixed infestation being quite frequent. 3. The distribution of the parasites is analysed according to age and sex, including the degree of anemia when present. 4. A study is made of 63 children under treatment at the Pediatrics Section of Hospital San Juan de Dios during 1954 and showing heavy uncinariasis and trichocephaliasis; the salient facts are analysed regarding clinic­al, hematological, and parasitological manifestation. Flocculation tests and blood protein values are also considered. 5. The various therapeutic procedures, including bload transfusions, ferrotherapy and the usual anti-helminthics, are discussed and evaluated.
