Abstract

Despite Helen O'Connell's landmark publications on the anatomical structure of the clitoris, this organ has remained absent from anatomy texts and illustrations, including course materials for health professionals. We aim to illustrate a variety of 3D models currently available for true anatomical representation of the clitoris as well as the lack of academic publication in this area. A MEDLINE scoping review conducted in October 2021 was performed to assess available information for an anatomically correct 3D printed clitoris. From 25 returned articles and abstracts, 5 were assessed for eligibility, however none were appropriate to include in analysis, highlighting the lack of published literature supporting use of 3D models of the clitoris. Outside of the MEDLINE search, websites from respected education resources were reviewed. A variety of 3D models are now available for use for medical and sexual education; including a vulva with an insertable clitoris (Sex-ED), layered models with removable vulva revealing underlying clitoris (Thrive education) as well as life sized, 1:1 ratio, soft rubber 3D anatomically correct models (Fig.1. Anatomical Education). (Please note we wish to show models available with permission from these developers if abstract accepted for presentation) Clitoral anatomy and function are significant. The lack of accurate representation of the clitoris in medical and surgical textbooks and the associated silence concerning female orgasm and sexual agency continue into this century. Educators, academics and clinicians are designing accurate models of the clitoris with an aim to make this organ tangible. More work needs to be done for the scientific community to embrace this knowledge and integrate into educational materials in the future. The authors were not funded for design or development of any of the devices presented. Their participation at this conference is not supported by any company or organisation. They promote educational devices from which they derive no reward other than reputational benefit.
