Abstract

In modern societies, the major cause of severe head injuries is probably traffic accidents. We studied CT findings, outcomes [3], and pathologic features of severe head injury cases (Glasgow coma score [4] < 8) and we found that in some cases outcome was poor despite minimal CT abnormalities. These patients became comatose immediately after the insults and never subsequently regained consciousness. The clinical sample was composed of 68 cases among 422 hospitalized patients who had sustained head injuries in traffic accidents between December 1979 and March 1984. Cases with gross intracranial hematomas and primary brain stem damage were excluded. Most of the patients underwent CT scan within 2 h of the accident.
