Abstract

Objective To detect the clinical value of the blood serum and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)procalcitonin(PCT)for patients with central nervous system infection. Methods A total of the patients(n=87)with severe cerebral stroke were involved. Double antibody sandwich assay was used to detect blood serum and CSF procalcitonin in the first day after hospital admission. Results Blood serum and CSF PCT levels were significantly higher in the group of purulent meningitis than those in the group of viral, tuberculous meningitis and neurosphilis. Conclusions Blood serum and CSF PCT level are better indicator to discriminate bacterial infection from non-bacterial infection in central nervous system infection. Key words: Procalcitonin; Central nervous system infection; Cerebralspinal fluid
