Event Abstract Back to Event CLINICAL UTILITY OF A NOVEL SENSORIMOTOR APPROACH FOR A PATIENT PRESENTING WITH MULTIPLE TBIS: A CASE STUDY Edythe Heus1* 1 Neuro Think Tank, United States The knockout is the most common acute neurologic injury in boxing. In this case study we describe a retired professional boxer, age 41 with a history of multiple knockouts and presenting with severe cerebellar dysfunction thought to be caused by multiple traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Patient’s baseline testing showed gross deficits in the performance of balance, gait and coordination tests, and cerebellar tests. Patient’s goal in treatment was to be able to return to the boxing ring. Patient participated in an inexpensive, novel sensorimotor approach comprising of specific patterns of movement on equipment that enhances sensory feedback and is unstable by design. The instability and sensorimotor stimulation had been previously shown in other cases to increase cerebellar functioning, neuroplasticity and cognitive function, but not specifically in a case a multiple TBIs caused by knockout. 12 treatments of 60-90 minutes were administered over a 6 week period. Patient was tested again at the end of treatment and all balance, gait and coordination tests, and cerebellar tests were found to be within the normal range. Patient also reported a change in cognitive function at the end of treatment. He chose not to re-enter the boxing profession and instead to focus his efforts on supporting the rehabilitation of peers suffering from TBI. The outcomes suggest that patients with TBIs, acute or chronic, may be able to improve their performance and postural stability, as well as cognitive function with this novel form of sensorimotor training.
