Abstract

At the annual meeting of American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Chicago, Sept 19, 1987, Jeffrey F. Colton, MD, and J. Jan Beekhuis, MD, Birmingham, Mich, presented a study using Zyplast, which is the third product in the evolution of Zyderm 1 and 2. This is a cross-linked collagen, and is used for deep dermal augmentation. It appears to have better longevity. The recommended areas for this product are the glabellar area, the nasolabial area, the oral commissures, acne scars, and postrhinoplasty defects. An interesting aspect of their treatment is that the physician does the initial consultation, but a registered nurse performs the treatment sessions. Frequently, they use a combination Zyderm for superficial defects and Zyplast for deeper defects, or a combination of Zyderm and Zyplast. Two hundred eighty-seven patients were treated and only one had an adverse reaction (even though that person had a negative skin test). The
