Abstract

24 subjects with intestinal amoebiasis were treated with oral dehydroemetine resinate (10 mg. tablets) in a daily divided dosage of 1 mg. per kg. body weight for 10 days. The drug was administered after meals. The cure rate was 71% and symptomatic relief was attained in 21 patients (85%). On the 2nd day of therapy, 5 patients had shown gastro-intestinal side effects which were not severe enough to discontinue the treatment. The long term follow-up rate was rather poor (62·5%). The drug proved to be non-toxic and well tolerated by most patients. It is concluded that such safe potent amoebicidal agent is highly successful in intestinal amoebiasis.
