Abstract

Purpose: Despite an increasing awareness of the placebo effect in clinical trials in osteoarthritis (OA), there remains a need to better account for this effect in clinical trial analyses. The placebo effect is not a random process, but has been shown to be strongly influenced by quantifiable characteristics of the patient and the clinical context. We have analysed available placebo data in order to model a placebo response with consideration of the different types of therapy used in the clinical trials.
