Abstract

Purpose: AccuBoost applicators are designed to deliver whole breast irradiation (WBI) boost dose in a non-invasive manner instead of conventional WBI electron boost. In order to irradiate the target volume while providing additional dose sparing to critical structures like the skin, the current round applicator design has been augmented through addition of an internally-truncated cone shield. Brachytherapy dose distributions for the new cone applicator were simulated using model Monte Carlo (MC) methods for radiation transport and a conventional treatment planning system (TPS), and the dose distributions compared to the unmodified round applicator.
