Abstract

Abstract Systematic desensitization, one of the foremost techniques in behavior therapy, has based its rationale on the reciprocal inhibition principle. Careful scrutiny, however, reveals that factors other than reciprocal inhibition may be intrinsic to systematic desensitization, namely the therapeutic relationship and/or facilitating conditions, relaxation training, hypnosis, and clinical suggestions. This treatise supports the presence of each of these factors and asserts that: (a) the reciprocal inhibition cannot be solely relied upon, (b) specific clinical suggestions and relaxation training should be used, and (c) hypnotic phenomena or hypnotic-like effects should be promoted.
