Abstract

Objective To investigate the occurrence, treatment and clinical outcomes of single enchondroma of the hand. Methods Sixty-three patients with single enchondroma of the hand who were operated following curettage of the tumor between 1997 and 2006 were reviewed.The defect was reconstructed by autologous bone graft in 43 cases and allograft in 17 cases.In 3 cases the defect Was left alone. Results Postoperatively redness the wound was seen in 3 cases treated with allograft The symptoms subsided after cortisone administration.Primary wound healing was achieved in all cases.Postoperative follow-up period ranged from 2 to 10 years.Only one case in the autologous bone group had recurrence. Conclusion The enchondromas of the hand should be treated sutgically and the prognosis is generally good.Allograft should be used with caution in the hand.
