Abstract

Insomnia is a common complaint of variable severity. Among a selected group of 20 institutionalized women the hypnotic effect of ethchlorvynol (Placidyl) was found superior to that of a matching placebo. The hypnotic effect of the placebo was also established. The character of each woman's sleep was determined principally by her own response. Persons with minimal insomnia are poorly suited for this type of subjective evaluation of sleep.
