Abstract

Ten intrathoracic goiters, coming within Rives' classification, were treated at our department during the past 20 years and nine months. All of patients were found to have substernal goiters, six of which were adenomas and fours adenomatous goiters. In the former group, there were five men and one woman with a mean age of 66 years, and in the latter, one man and three women with an average age of 55 years. All of the patients had few symptoms related to their goiters, because most had been found on chest X-ray examination in a compulsory mass survey. However all showed some tracheal deviation or stenosis on the films. Nevertheless, a collar incision was used in all cases and each goiter was removed without requiring an additional sternal separation. There was a troublesome complication after the operation in only one case. Therefore, surgical removal should be chosen for intrathoracic goiter immediately after diagnosis.
