Abstract

Objective Pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common disease in neurosurgery department. Some patients would complicate with secondary epilepsy. Frequent epilepsy attack would impact brain function of child who is in the growth and development period, which would result in secondary brain injury. For these reasons, the treatment of complicated secondary epilepsy has great clinical meaning. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of sodium valproate on the treatment of pediatric post-traumatic Epilepsy (PTE). Methods A prospective study was conducted in 70 patients who had undergone pediatric PTE from March 2014 to March 2016 in our hospital. The patients were grouped on the basis of random draw group. Treatment group (n=35) is treated with sodium valproate while control group (n=35) is treated with phenytoin sodium. Comparation is performed in electroencephalogram (EEG) between two groups. Results The total effect rate of treatment group (94.29%, P 0.05). Comparably, there is significant difference in post-operation EEG normalization rate (88.57% of treatment group vs 57.14% of control group, P<0.05), widespread abnormal rate between treatment group and control group (P<0.05). Conclusion Sodium valproate has significant treatment effect on the treat of epilepsy secondary from pediatric TBI. Moreover, sodium valproate has more treatment effect compared with phenytoin sodium. Key words: Sodium valproate; Pediatric traumatic brain injury; Post-traumatic epilepsy; Electroencephalogram
