Abstract

End‐of‐life care is inarguably one of the most critical issues facing health today. Social workers play a vital role with patients and families who are facing chronic illness and the end of life. This chapter uses a case‐based approach to illustrate the following dynamics: coping with death anxiety, dying with dignity, the role of hope, and the value of developing a holding environment. Implications for social work practice are provided which highlight strategies for managing countertransference in this type of work.
