Abstract

BackgroundGeneral nurses caring for pediatric oncology inpatients lack training and confidence to provide safe effective care. MethodsMajor components of pediatric oncology care were identified and a combined didactic and clinical simulation educational program was provided to 60 nurses caring for pediatric oncology inpatients in an urban academic hospital. ResultsExcellent response rate (96.7%, 58/60). Statistically significant improvement in nurses' self-efficacy six months after intervention on paired sample t-test and Wilcoxon signed rank tests in each care domain. ConclusionsThe didactic and clinical simulation program was effective for training nurses caring for pediatric oncology patients and can be used as a model for general nurses caring for vulnerable patient populations.
