Abstract

Objective To study the clinical significance of human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) gene expression in giant cell tumor of bone. Methods By using in situ hybridization (ISH) techniques, the clinical significance of hTERT mRNA expression was tested in 84 cases of giant cell tumor of bone,32 cases of hyperostosis,28 cases of heterotopic ossification and 20 cases of normal bone tissues. These cases were collected from Jan.2008 to Dec.2011 in our department. The expression level and the location of hTERT gene were observed by using the image analyzing system. Results hTERT was expressed in 46.4% (39/84) of giant cell tumors of bone and it had an obvious correlation with the differentiation level of tumor cells ( P < 0.05 ).There was a close correlation between the expression of hTERT and the location of tumor cells.hTERT gene was not detected in 32 cases of hyperostosis,28 cases of heterotopic ossification or 20 cases of normal bone tissues. Conclusion hTERT gene may play an important role in the pathogenesis of giant cell tumors of bone. Key words: Giant cell tumors; Telomerse; Gene expression
