Abstract

Abstract: Flexible bronchoscopy (FFB) is a common procedure used in the evaluation of bronchiectasis, but its clinical significance when diagnosing this condition has yet to be established. In this retrospective review of 83 patients with proven bronchiectasis, the value of FFB is assessed. FFB is believed to be a safe and easily performed procedure that provides direct visualization of the airway, aiding in the localization of the bleeding site in the evaluation of hemoptysis. It also permits collection of bacteriologic samples with minimal contamination. Although FFB may be of some advantage in the diagnosis of bronchiectasis, routine use of FFB for all patients with bronchiectasis is not recommended because the endoscopic findings tend to be nondiagnostic. Indications for FFB in bronchiectasis include the presence of hemoptysis, the possibility of obstruction, a poor response to medical therapy, and instances in which bronchography is needed.
