Abstract

Objective To assess the infectious complications of antibiotic prophylaxis following transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) for patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods All studies that have been published comparing the effects of prophylactic antibiotic treatment (study group) and no prophylactic antibiotic treatment (control group) on infectious complications in pa-tients with HCC following TACE were searched and evaluated strictly in rash quality, then the adopted stud-ies were analyzed by Meta-analysis. The risk ratio (RR) for infectious complications between the two groups were calculated. Results Totally four studies including 1 358 cases were analyzed. The cumulative cases in prophylactic antibiotic treatment group were 960, 83 of whom were reported postoperative infection, while in the control group, the number was 398 and 43 respectively. The pooled RR was 0.88, with a 95% confidence interval (0.62-1.24). Conclusion It is not routinely necessary for HCC patients to undergo an-tibotic prophylaxis following TACE. Key words: Carcinoma, hepatocellular; Chemoembolization, therapeutic; Antibotic prophylaxis; Anti-bacterial agents; Meta-analysis
