Abstract

This retrospective study summarizes the clinical reasons for death/euthanasia in 123 necropsies of military working dogs (MWDs). The primary reason for elimination of MWDs was locomotion difficulties involving the rear legs. This was followed by senility and neoplasia as reasons for terminating the duty status of individuals MWDs. An analysis of the data showed that the age of 10 years was critical when evaluating MWDs for continued duty performance. This study also demonstrated that osteoarthritis of the femorotibial joint may be a contributing cause of locomotion difficulties in addition to previously documented osteoarthritis of the coxofemoral joint.
