Abstract

Documenting the outcomes of therapy is mandatory in today's health care environment. Such information is required by external agencies and desired by internal users. This article describes the development of a comprehensive database by one home infusion service that allows benchmarking of the results of care with other services over time. It also can be used to identify problems that are suitable for quality improvement initiatives. The database additionally allows analyses of the relationship between changing patient demographics and treatment processes over time and selected outcomes. Given the high cost and growing number of patients receiving home infusion services, the ability to address these kinds of questions is imperative for individual providers and for the entire health system.
