Abstract

Background: Maxillofacial fractures are often diverse and complex. They are not only life-threatening but also leave serious sequelae in terms of both function and aesthetics if not treated early and properly. The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical, X ray features and results of surgical treatment of maxillofacial fractures. Subjects and Methods: Clinical and radiographic data were collected from 45 patients (average age 31.40 ± 13.10) diagnosed with maxillofacial fractures. All of patients were operated, treated with internal fixation with miniplates. This study assessed the general treatment results of: anatomy, aesthetics and function at the time of discharge, 3 months, 6 months postoperatively. Results: The percentage of popular clinical symptoms were: facial swelling, deformed face: 97.8%, restricted mouth opening: 91.1%, bleeding, nasal congestion: 88.9%, tenderness on palpation at fracture site: 86.7%, break in the continuity of bone: 75.6%, occlusal derangement: 62.2%, maxillofacial soft tissue injuries 60%. X ray: inferior orbital rim fracture accounts for high proportion, which the right side and the left side constitue 66.7% and 62.2% respectively, vertical-middle fracture of maxillary bone accounts for lowest rate: right side 4.4% and left side 2.2%. The result after treatment 6 months are: good: 86.7%, fairly good: 13.3%, bad: 0%. Conclusions: The method of internal fixation with miniplates to treat maxillofacial fractures helps to fully restore the functional and aesthetic needs of the patient.
